On 27th February, Mr Mikio Mori, deputy chief of mission of the Embassy of Japan to the Republic of Burundi signed a grant contract (GGP) with the association CORD for an amount of USD 92,853. CORD will use this amount to improve the access to safe drinking water and sanitation in the Bujumbura Rural Province through the construction of a water gravity scheme.

The Grant Signing Ceremony was held in Mukonko school, with the attendance of local authorities, NGO’s, Water Management Agency representatives, some beneficiaries and the media to cover the event. It started by a representation of a local artist performing traditional acting. The local administrator, NGO and beneficiaries representatives expressed their sincere gratitude to the Government of Japan for assisting them to solve the problems affecting their communities. The governor of the province Mr Jacques Minani reminded the audience that this province had been heavily affected during the war and the water coverage is still very low. He thanked the government of Japan for helping to improve the daily life of Burundians.

In his speech, Mr Mori expressed his sincere condolences to the victims of the heavy floods which occurred 3 weeks before. In solidarity with the people of Burundi, the government of Japan sent emergency relief goods worth 120 000 USD just after the tragedy. Mr Mori then congratulated CORD for qualifying to receive the grant and encouraged the organization to manage the fund well and complete the projects in good time.
