Signing Ceremony for the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) (7th January, 2015)
On 7th January, the Embassy signed two contracts amounting up to 181,043 USD under the scheme of the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) with Rwandese Health Environment Initiative (RHEPI) and Rwandaise pour le Developpement Endogene (ARDE). RHEPI will implement the Project for Construction of Samaritan International School in Karangagi Sector in Nyagatare District. This project of 86,017 USD is to establish a primary school with six class rooms, a storage, an office with necessary equipment, and two water tanks. This will enable 270 poor students to access quality education and to reduce the number of dropouts. ARDE will implement the Project for Construction of the Facility of Water Supply in Gihumba in Muhanga District. This project of 95,026 USD is to set up two water reservoirs, four public fountains with kiosks, and a public water tap for livestock. This will enable almost 1,700 people in the targeted communities to get access to safe and clean water, together with the operational training for the beneficiaries.
Ambassador Ogawa said in his remarks that since the framework of GGP was established between MINAFFET and the Embassy of Japan in 1996, the Government of Japan has supported grass roots activities for over 5.8 million dollars and the number of projects which benefited from GGP up to now amounts to 81 in Rwanda. The two grants are expected to help Rwandan to achieve some criteria of the Millennium Development Goals, namely the achievement of universal primary education and reduction of child mortality, as well as Vision 2020’s targets and EDPRS 2. Mr. Fabian Ruzigana, Chairman of RHEPI appreciated the support for poor and vulnerable children to access quality education. Mr. Paul Murenzi, Legal Representative of ARDE appreciated the support for historically marginalized population to access clean water.
