Economic Cooperation Media Tour (January 19th, 2016)
On January 19th, the Embassy organized the second media tour on Japanese economic cooperation to show Japan’s assistance in the agriculture sector in Rwanda. Hon. Tony NSANGANIRA, Minister of State in charge of Agriculture, participated in the tour as well as ten journalists from various media (Newspapers: the New Times, Imvaho Nshya and East African Business Week, TV: Rwanda TV, Radios: Radio Rwanda, City Radio, KT Radio and Contact FM, Online News Sites: Igihe and Kigali Today) .
The participants visited the “Project for Development of Irrigation Scheme in Ngoma District” as well as the technical cooperation site on the irrigation, where the Minister also exchanged with the residents of the benefiting communities.
The grant aid project entitled “Project for Development of Irrigation Scheme in Ngoma District (15,490 million yen)” that was started in June, 2015, which aims to irrigate 300 ha paddy field, among which 100ha will be alimented by pumping irrigation with the energy generated by solar panels. The particularity of this project is to reduce the maintenance cost thanks to solar energy, and to provide water cooperatives and farmers’ cooperatives with technical skills through the field training. The construction will be completed by August 2016 and the irrigated farming will presumably start from August, 2017, when the water reserve would be full.
Hon. Nsanganira, stated that he was satisfied with the cooperation with Japan and this project can have an impact through technical cooperation on the other areas of Rwanda as well. Charge d’Affaires, Mr. Tomio Sakamoto, said that this will hopefully be the model of the other projects in Rwanda.
