Japan and Rwanda have signed a 2.21 Billion Japanese Yen Grant Aid for the Project for Improvement of Substations and Distribution Network (Phase 2) (March 8, 2016)

The Embassy of Japan and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning have signed a 2.21 Billion Japanese Yen (approx. 18.4 million USD) Grant Aid for the Project for Improvement of Substations and Distribution Network (Phase 2) on March 8, 2016.
This Grant Aid will be used in such activities as constructing and expanding the substations, associated power transmission and distribution facilities in Kigali in order to stabilize the power supply with higher efficiency. Upon the completion of the project, it will bring a positive impact not only on the economy aspect but also on social side.
Mr. Sakamoto, Chargé d'Affaires a. i. at the Embassy of Japan, said that the investment in the power distribution network of Kigali is a crucial issue, given the high and growing energy demand, especially in Kigali City, which accounts for 64 % today. He also added that this Grant is in line with the country’s goals such as EDPRS 2 and Vision 2020, which aims to increase its power generation to 563MW by 2017/18.
Hon. Claver Gatete, Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, expressed his gratitude to the Government of Japan for its continuous support not only in traditional cooperation sectors such as water, sanitation and agriculture, but also in energy sector. He mentioned that we see today the Phase 2 of this project, and hope this support will contribute in terms of stabilizing the energy and bringing efficiency in power supply through strengthening the substations.
