Inauguration of improvement of livelihoods and food security for women and marginalized populations in Gahunga sector (24th March 2014)

On March 24th, the inauguration ceremony of the project entitled “Improvement of livelihoods and food security for women and marginalized populations in Gahunga sector” took place at the storage facility. The project funded by the Government of Japan consists of constructing the facilities of a storage facility of seed potatoes, a 60 cm3 water tank as well as five 10cm3 water tanks in Gahunga sector, Burera District, Northern Province.
The facilities will promote the increase in productivity of potatoes which will improve the food security in this area. Ambassador Ogawa said in his remarks, “I expect that local farmers can produce potatoes in a self-sufficient manner and the small water tanks will assist targeted population to easily access safe and clean water which will help to improve their living environment”. The president of the beneficiaries of cooperatives appreciated the support from the Government of Japan as the facilities have enabled them not only to access the irrigation but also to realize the hygienic environment.
