On March 19, Ambassador Miyashita attended the launching ceremony for the Project on Strengthening the Capacities of the Rwanda Peace Academy in Musanze, Northern Province.

The Rwanda Peace Academy (RPA) was established with the aim of training both military and civilian personnel for UN Peacekeeping Operations (PKO) in 2001. Japan has been supporting RPA since 2008 through the Japan-UNDP Partnership Fund. In this project, RPA will train up to 100 personnel through five different courses, such as women’s empowerment in peacebuilding, within one year. The “UN Personnel Safety and Security Course,” which began on the first day of this new project, involves 21 participants from Rwanda, Comoros, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda.

Ambassador Miyashita said in his remarks: “This is not the first time that the Government of Japan supports RPA in collaboration with UNDP. Previously, thanks to the efficient use of the budget, we were able to conduct two additional training courses within the initial budget. RPA plays a pivotal role in promoting peacebuilding on the African continent by Africans’ initiative. Rwanda is the third largest contributor to PKO personnel in the world. As a member state of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission, Japan is making every effort to realize world peace, and in this regard, we highly appreciate the excellent contribution of Rwanda to peace building. The peace of Africa constitutes the cornerstone of world peace. Japan is determined to make further contribution to peace building.” .

Col. Jill Rutaremara, Director of RPA, pointed out that the project is expected to enhance the capacity development of regional security sector actors in conflict prevention, conflict management and resolution as well as peacebuilding. He expressed his gratitude to both the Government of Japan and UNDP for their continuous support for RPA and their contribution to regional and international peace and security through the partnership with RPA. .

On this occasion, Professor Hideaki Shinoda from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, who is a specialist in peacekeeping and peacebuilding, held an extraordinary lecture following the launching ceremony.
