The Handover Ceremony of “the Project for Construction of Gasunu Community Market” under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP/Kusanone)

On February 28, in Giheta District, Gitega Province, H.E. Ambassador Isao Fukushima and HON. Georges Nshimirimana, Secretary of CNDD-FDD Party in Gitega Province attended the handover ceremony of “the Project for Construction of Gasunu Community Market.”

Under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP), the Government of Japan provided 88,692USD to Giheta District for the construction of two covered market buildings, three warehouses with a total of 32 rooms, a toilet building, and two public water taps. The purpose of the project is to stabilize the income of farmers by enabling approximately 4,000 residents to trade at the market regardless of weather conditions.

In his speech, Mr. Niyonkuru, representative of the residents and the market’s users, said that before the completion of this project, he conducted his business by spreading out his products on the ground, which often meant that he could not conduct business during the rainy season, and he was always very worried about his income. He expressed his gratitude for the assistance of the Government of Japan in the construction of the new covered market and expressed his optimism for the economic growth of the region.


Ambassador Fukushima said in his speech, "I am pleased that the Embassy of Japan has supported Giheta District for the construction of new buildings.” He also thanked Giheta District for its regional contribution to the agricultural sector through the implementation of this project. “The Government and people of Japan hope that these facilities will help to ensure stable agricultural activity for the residents of this region, in order to achieve sustainable community development where no one is left behind," he added.


Mr. Nshimirimana, Secretary of CNDD-FDD Party the government party) in Gitega Province, and Mr. Sabukunze, Advisor to the Governor of Gitega in charge of development, expressed their appreciation for the project, and Ms. Ninahaza, Municipal Administrator of Giheta, promised that the facility will be properly maintained and used well for a long period.
