The official handover ceremony of the “Project for the improvement of the Port of Bujumbura”

On Wednesday October 9, 2024, the official handover ceremony of the “Project for the improvement of the Port of Bujumbura” was held at the port of Bujumbura in Burundi. At this ceremony, Mr. Isao FUKUSHIMA, Ambassador of Japan to Burundi, His Excellency Mr. Evariste NDAYISHIMIYE, President of the Republic, Ms. Marie Chantal NIJIMBERE, Minister of Commerce, Transport, Industry and Tourism, Mr. Naoki ANDO, Vice-President of JICA, among others, were present.

For this project, the Government of Japan has granted approximately 3.5 billion Yen, equivalent to 100 billion Burundian Francs, for the modernization of the port of Bujumbura. Through this project, Japan has supported Burundi in improving the port corresponding to international standards, equipped with a shipway, a repair factory, and a large container park, which will facilitate regional trade, with a view to revitalizing the economic growth of Burundi and the Great Lakes region.
During the ceremony, Mr. FUKUSHIMA, Ambassador of Japan, praised the efforts made by all stakeholders in this project (Government of Burundi, AMPB, JICA, the Japanese contractors Padeco and WKK), while emphasizing that Japan attaches great importance to strengthening connectivity for achieving economic development of African countries, and it was one of the agendas of the TICAD Ministerial Meeting which took place in Tokyo in August 2024. He expected that this port will revitalize the economy of the country, of the region and of the African continent.

H.E. Mr. NDAYISHIMIYE, President of the Republic, expressed his feelings of satisfaction and thanked the Government of Japan for constantly standing by the people of Burundi and supporting the country even in difficult times. Before closing the ceremony, He said he looked forward to the future where trade between the coastal countries of Lake Tanganyika will increase considerably and benefit as many people as possible.
