Japan and UNICEF Rwanda support provision of Health, Nutrition, and WASH services to vulnerable communities in affected areas due to natural disasters and diseases.

2026/2/10
On 9 February, 2026, The Government of Japan announced a financial support to UNICEF Rwanda, to engage in provision of Health, Nutrition, and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services to vulnerable sections of the population in Rwanda. This collaboration is a continuation from the previous year, amounting to US$ 2.5 million funding in total for two consecutive years.

Rwanda continues to face the devastating impacts of climate-related disasters, including recurrent floods and landslides that damage critical infrastructure and exacerbate existing gaps in access to essential services. These challenges are further compounded by overstretched funding mechanisms, with key sectors, particularly health, nutrition, and WASH, facing significant resource gaps. As a result, the risk of disease outbreaks has escalated, particularly among vulnerable populations, including children and displaced communities.

Building on Japan’s previous intervention, this new funding will address the urgent needs of over 100,000 people in Western Rwanda, focusing on those most affected by climate shocks and public health emergencies.

Speaking about the Program, Ambassador NAKAJO stated, “Our assistance supports the shared goal of providing Universal Health Coverage to all, a goal embraced by both Japan and Rwanda. By preventing endemic diseases in areas affected by flood and diseases, this initiative upholds the core philosophy of Human Security. Through these efforts, we aim to ensure all individuals, especially in vulnerable situations, can live with dignity and without fear or want."

This initiative is a vital part of Japan’s ongoing partnership with Rwanda, reinforcing the country's efforts to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters and disease outbreaks. It also complements UNICEF’s broader humanitarian response to ensure that no child is left behind.

“UNICEF Rwanda would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the Government of Japan for this very timely and crucial support,” said Ms. Lieke van de Wiel, UNICEF Representative in Rwanda. “Together, we can build a stronger, healthier, and more resilient future for all children and families in Rwanda.
