Embassy of Japan organizes the first-ever Japanese “Washoku” Culinary Demonstration
The Embassy of Japan and Kigali Marriott, in collaboration with the Japan Food Product Overseas Promotion Center (JFOODO),co-organized Japanese Washoku Culinary Demonstration, held on July 24 at Kigali Marriott, bringing together more than 30 chefs to explore the traditions, techniques, and philosophy behind authentic Japanese cuisine.
The program featured an online lecture by Professor Naoyuki Yanagihara, Cultural Exchange and Goodwill Ambassador for the Promotion of Japanese Cuisine, who shared fascinating insights into the history, philosophy, and cultural significance of Japanese food.
Ambassador NAKAJO described the demonstration as “a cornerstone for creating a commercial and authentic value chain of Japanese cuisine in Rwanda,” while also paving the way for Washoku to flourish among Rwandan consumers and hospitality businesses. He emphasized the power of food to bring people together, noting that “Food brings happiness. It creates an exchange between people.” Reflecting on the rich culinary traditions of both countries, he added, “Rwandan food has its own history and culture, and Japan also has a long history of food culture. Sharing it, tasting it and enjoying it together creates more value in building our bilateral relationship.”
The program continued with a live demonstration by the Official Chef of the Embassy of Japan in Rwanda, followed by a tasting of freshly prepared sushi, sashimi, and tempura offering participants a firsthand taste of the artistry and balance that define Washoku.
