Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation to Rwanda Karate Federation (October 19, 2018)

An award ceremony of the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation was held at the Ambassador’s residence on October 19, 2018. This year the Foreign Minister’s Commendation was awarded to the Rwanda Karate Federation (FERWAKA) for its contribution to promoting karate in Rwanda and strengthening Japan-Rwanda relations. The award ceremony was attended by FERWAKA members and karate-lovers, as well as representatives of the Government of Rwanda, including the President of the Rwanda National Olympic Committee and a former Minister of Sports and Culture.
Ambassador Miyashita’s speech
Ambassador Miyashita said in his speech that he thanks FERWAKA for promoting karate in Rwanda and contributing friendly relations between Japan and Rwanda. He congratulated FERWAKA on hosting the Africa Karate Championship and getting 8 medals including one gold medal. Also, he encouraged karatekas in Rwanda to continue practicing using 400 karate mats the Government of Japan donated at the end of September, and said that he is looking forward to welcoming Rwandans at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Presentation of the Certificate
Mr. Theo Uwayo, President of FERWAKA, said in his speech, after receiving the certificate of commendation from Ambassador Miyashita, that he would like to express his gratitude to the Embassy of Japan for cooperating with FERWAKA including the annual Karate Ambassador’s Cup competition and the donation of 400 karate mats. He also said that FERWAKA will train the Rwandan karatekas so that they will be selected to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Interview by the press
The representative of the Ministry of Sports and Culture said that he is proud that FERWAKA received the award from the Government of Japan. He hoped that FERWAKA will further enhance the level of Rwandan karatekas.
